Crochet Spiral Mesh Baby Hat Free Pattern

Posted by Trudy on September 19, 2010 at 2:43 PM

This is a very quick and easy hat pattern for a newborn baby or reborn doll.  The spiral technique eliminates the "seam" of chain stitches you get when you join each row.  It can be dressed up with a flower clip.

Spiral Mesh Baby Hat

Size: Newborn, adjustable for head circumference 13 - 14"

Materials: 1 ball Size 3 crochet cotton.

Size F hook.

1 yd. 3/8” ribbon

Gauge: 5 rows dc = 2”

Rd 1: Ch 4, *dc in last ch from hook, ch 1; repeat from * 4 times; slip st in 3rd st of starting chain to join – 6 ch 1 spaces.

Rd 2: Slip st in first ch 1 space, ch 2, *dc in next ch 1 space, ch 1, dc in same space, ch 1 repeat from * 5 times. Do not join. You will start working in a spiral now. Mark the end of the row, and move the marker up as you work.

Rd 3: Dc in ch 2 space, * ch 1, dc in next ch 1 space, ch 1, dc in same space (1 V stitch made), ch 1, dc in next space; repeat from * around, ending by making a V stitch in the same space ch 1 space as the slip st at the beginning of rd 2.. Do not join.

Rd 4: *Ch 1, dc in next ch 1 space, ch 1, dc in same space (One V stitch made), ch 1, dc in next space; ch 1, dc in next space; repeat from * around. Do not join.

Rd 5 – 7: Following established pattern, V stitch in center space of each V stitch, and (ch 1, dc) in each ch 1 space between the V stitches, around.

Rd 8 – 9: Ch 1, dc in next space, repeat around.

Rd 10: Ch 1, dc in next space, repeat around up to last space; ch 1, hdc in last space, ch 1.

Rd 11: Sc in next dc, sc in next space, repeat around up to hdc. Sc in hdc; join with a slip st to the first sc.

Rd 12: Ch 5, *skip 1 sc, tr in next sc, ch 1; Repeat from * around. Join with a slip st to the 4th ch at the beginning of the row.

Rd 13: Ch 1, * sc in next ch 1 space; in next space, sc, ch 3, sc; repeat from * around. Join with a slip st to first sc. Fasten off.

Weave the ribbon through the eyelet row. Try on the baby or doll and pull the ribbon tighter as needed to fit. Tie ribbon in a bow and trim ends. If desired, tack the bow in place. Add a flower clip or other trim.

I hadn't thought of that. You could use baby yarn and make a winter hat with flaps.
